1) A vaguely connected mess of electronic/electrical/mechanical circuitry that is most likely no longer required for the correct functioning of the system, and even when it was, probably served a purpose that was dubious at best. Such systems clearly benefit from a 'haircut'.
2) A general clutter of adhoc material.
