No, I have not painted my windows yet. Did not have time before winter set in. They have survived without being re-painted for 30 years! So one more winter was fine for them. They must be in the most perfect protected orientation/microclimate to have survived so long.

I have moved away from Linseed oil as a paint choice for them. I do not think it would be suitable. I do not know how the old timber would take to a natural ”oil". The look on Linseed is quite translucent; I think a more solid colour is more fitting somehow. In addition the prep for Linseed and drying time look to be quite difficult.

My neighbour over the road ripped out their original leaded lights (same period) last year. I saved all the wood. I am planning to paint mine this summer. Before I do, I will use the off cuts of my neighbours windows as a test for different paints to see how they look/react.

I think I will look at Sikkens Satura, Sadolin SuperDec, and I may, just to see, look at a Linseed product.

Condensation was not a problem in our Segal house. If the one as CAT has condensation problems then it is likely they ignored or dismissed one of the basic concepts of the Segal method which is that walls should breath.

We sold it in 2011 but I keep in touch with it.

I saw CAT as being very commercial during my last visit about and some of its "policies" seemed to be influenced by commercial interests.

It started with good ideas for self build self sufficiency living using recycled and self constructed equipment which is beyond the ability of most people. So it was natural to widen the scope to include equipment manufactured for the "self sufficiency" market. But I sensed that sponsorship and free issue demonstration items biased the advice towards the more generous suppliers.

I took an interest in the Walter Segal house at CAT because Walter and I were friends after my wife and I built a Walter Segal house in 1980. I haven't seen the house at CAT but have heard a bit about the process of it being built and some of the politics involved. ( not from Walter himself )
