Do 5"x1" door frames from Travis etc shrink much after fitting? How much would they lose from o/a width?
Can you buy any that are so dry that they won't?
Tnx all

How would you build a frame for a bath panel (both front and end) and fit a 3mm hardboard to it with some skirting at the bottom? I'd like to end up with something like the image in the last pic.
I was thinking of using 2 x 1 battons secured to the floorboards around the bath and then on top of...
Hi! Looking for some advice please. I’ve got a 1965 house with tilting windows with Spilka hinges.
I’m going to refinish them because they’re still working BUT there’s some gaps opened around the bottom corners. See the pic.
The near frame is the example where it looks like the bottom rail has...
Hi all,
I'm currently 1st fixing my security alarm cable in my own self build and I am trying to minimise any visible cable / trunking on / around the window frame.
It's all hard wired as I am not a great fan of wireless.
The frames are UPVC.
I have already fitted 2 concealed Elmdene flush...
Today we've been trying to hang our new garden gate by using the old hinges, trouble is for some reason the bottom part of the gate is leaving a big gap where's the top part is flush to the wall.
If we put the hinges back on the old gate it's flush o_O:eek:
The new gates not warped, it's flat...
I've a window with a gap around the frame in one corner - it measures about 1 ft x 1.5ft. It's pushed out on the outside too, so there's a draft.
Can I just use strong glue and push the frame back in, or would that put pressure on the window pane and risk cracking it over time? Any other...
Hi all,
bit of a weird one.
I need hinges for my doors to go into my frame. The old hinges are ruined, paint all over them etc and just thought i would get new ones.
Measuring up it seemed like they are approx. 76 x 51mm which i can see is a standard size, they are like 80 years old (1930s...
Hey guys, I'm planning to attach a living wall structure to an existing brick wall and would like to check that I'm not overlooking anything. I've attached a rough diagram of what I'm thinking.
the wall is structurally sound, double skin, 1.4m high, 10m long.
The living wall will be made of...
The 4 supplied fixing brackets are quite minimal; fixed to the wall, with silicon bonding bath to bracket.
There are 3 strengthening blocks moulded in to the underside of the rim (plus 1 in each corner) connecting the downstanding rim to the top of the bath sides. Are they just for...
Hi. Can anyone advise as to what is going on in this picture?! I am having a garage conversion done and the white UPVC French Doors have a metal (aluminium?) bottom rail/frame which doesn’t match the rest of the installation. Before I get fobbed off by the manufacturer and/or builder, I am...
I need to attached my ground level timber frame for decking to a sloped wall. How would i do this without making contact and the timber rotting from the rain?
any help would be appreciated
As I moved all my services under the stair, I thought would be good to closed it down and have access with double door opening. This will allow to push is the washing machine as well and have access for boiler and cylinder maintenance.
My idea is to frame off and board on both side having it...
I need to fit a door lining where a wall is to be dry lined (presuming that spread would want the door lining fitted before dry lining the wall).
10mm deep cable capping to accommodate, plus 12.5mm board and 3mm skim?
I was thinking of setting the door lining maybe 30mm proud, giving approx...
Hi DIY-ers,
I want to repair the wooden frame around a badly installed lock. I am happy for the lock to remain, but am not sure how best to fill the badly carved out gaps in the doorframe around it.
See pictures to understand. The largest part is 3cm wide X 2cm deep.
I've thought of cutting...
I'm converting a car port which used to house the front door (with side light) so there will now need to be a standard 30" internal door there, but there also needs be a step down in to the new room as levels differ.
Is a standard 32" door frame that includes a (preferably hardwood) threshold...
I need to replace my wooden garage doors and thought I'd replace the frame at the same time. However looking at them I'm wondering if there is a lintel or is there reliance on the wooden frame.
The house was built in 1935 and originally above the garage there was a non full height storage...
So I have an existing stand alone garage of cavity brick construction that needs a new roof and roof joists, currently the brickwork is about 1900mm high and as I'm putting a new roof on, i'd like to raise the overall height to 2500mm (it's on a boundary).
My plan is to build a stud wall about...
Hi all, planning a new kitchen and wondering about narrowing the back door so as to fit larger units onto the adjacent wall. Current door is 2134 x 915mm, solid wood, framed in brick work. Its a big door for the size of the kitchen, would actually prefer it to be smaller so it swings out less...
Hi,
I have an aluminum external door installed, and for some reason it doesn't seem to easily close anymore - it needs a really strong push to get the door past the felts on the frame. Once it gets past this, it does shut properly, and can be locked ok.
I'm assuming there is something I can...
Hello one and all,
