Looking for some advice. We moved into a new house end of last year, and found that the 1st floor is freezing in winter. In particular the bedroom wall and floor on the roof side.
I assume it is due to the roof? Rather than the garage. Can anyone provide advice on avoiding reducing the...
Is there a table somewhere to show how foil backed board compares to rockwool?
I have 50mm thick foil backed board on my wall, but 200mm thick rockwool under my floorboards.
From a warmth perspective, how do the 2 compare?
Example: 50mm board is the equivalent of 300mm rockwool etc. (I've...
New kitchen extension which has pitched warm roof.
Do I just need to 'celotex off' between each rafter to stop cold air coming in ??
(as ceilings will just be boarded- no insulation req )
Also above glazing a similar scenario ?? see pics
second image is where eaves are shut off due to box gutter
Hi, I want a small extension to accommodate a 2x1m bathroom (internal area) and a 1.5x1m service area. I'd like an external brickwork, in terms of appearance, to blend with the rest of the house (cavity wall from 1970).
What is the U-value requirement for the new external walls, please?
Am I...
We're getting a garden room built and I'm looking at the different roof options. We can either have EPDM roof on OSB with insulation below or 100mm Kingspan insulated metal panels. I much prefer the look of the metal roof but I'm curious as to whether it would increase the noise from rain...
Living room has a 3m long freezing cold external wall, brick with zero insulation. It’s free of windows, doors, and power outlets, a completely blank wall except massive new split system installed up high. I don’t want to move the slit system. I’m thinking about building a half-height “wall”...
I want to upgrade the loft insulation in my semi. The house has had dormers fitted and the remaining loft has been cross battened (2 x 100mm) and a thin layer of insulation laid (current situation is shown in the photo below). Wooden floorboards (22mm) have then been nailed on top.
The Loft...
Perhaps a daft question, but - I've bought some foil thermal insulation. It says that it's the equivalent of 300mm of rockwool.
If I was to put 2 layers on top of each other, would that be the same as 600mm of rockwool, or does it not work like that?
What ive actually done is put 500mm of foam...
My house is very cold so I have decided to try insulating my living room wall. It's the inside being insulated as the house is in a conservation area, meaning the outside is a no go.
I have built a stud wall and placed foil back foam boards snugly into the frame. As the room is not huge, the...

Hi everyone – I'm looking for some advice on our 1910 solid brick wall terraced house in the UK which we are planning to renovate. Unusually, it has some prefabricated 105mm thick concrete dormers and I'm not sure how best to renovate them. We are in a conservation zone, so have no choice but...
Hello,
I am currently having a rear extension built and have had a warm flat roof installed. It is only now however that I have realised the wall insulation is supposed to carry on up to meet the base of the warm flat roof!!
What would be the best way to insulate this gap before plasterboard...
Heya, I want to insulate the ceiling in the bathroom, which is also the roof at the top of the building. Wondering what's the best option or if there's any special considerations for this scenario? Does there need to be a vapour barrier? (or use foil backed plasterboard?)
The rafters are 100mm...
Hello
I am currently converting my garage to a games room. The external wall side, i will be putting in a timber frame then sliding in PIR insulation... However, as for the floor, it is a concrete slab. I will be laying the DPM then insulation....
I am confused to which step to take...
Currently midway through doing my ensuite. This photo shows the wall behind where a concealed cistern toilet will be. There will be a shelf at the top of the toilet going back horrizontally to the external brick wall - as such the top half of the brick wall will be plasterboarded and painted...
Hey all,
Currently undertaking a complete bathroom renovation, stripping everything back and starting from the bottom up. It's an older wimpy no-fines house so the walls/structure isn't the typical brick or blockworks. The plan is to take down all of the plasterboard walls (the horrific...
Hi Everyone,
First time posting here, so sorry if I'm not doing something right.
I bought an old (1919) house in June last year and have started some renovations in the meantime (new bathroom and new insulation), which are almost done. But after removing the roof fascia of the flat roof from the...
Hi all, first-time poster here, so apologies in advance for any missteps!
Here's the issue:
I'm experiencing large water spots on my bathroom ceiling during winter months, likely due to condensation.
The details:
- The unit is on the top (3rd) floor of a triple-decker, right below the roof...
Hi All,
Looking for some guidance. Our property has a side extension with a bedroom above a garage. We've recently topped up the loft insulation and fixed a leaky window which has helped, but the room still has a cold floor (almost like a heat sink) so doesn't stay as warm for long enough...
Hello
new regs states 150mm insulation on walls which are external...... normally when it used to be 50mm pir, I would use a 50mm timbers and cut off pir insulation in between...
Now it is 150mm, how do we put this on the wall? Can't exactly stick them on...
Thanks
