I'm building a replacement garage using the existing foundation slab from a much earlier now demolished building. The slab is 9.7m x 7m and I am planning to build it in 95mm single skin blockwork.

Part A of building regs states that a single skin blockwork wall cannot be longer than 9m, with piers every 3m. Is there a practical way of easily getting around the restriction imposed by the regulations? Such as additional piers or using 140mm block.

I don't think they say "cannot", as the approved documents are guidance only.

Consult the block manufacturer.

Bed joint reinforcement, weaker mortar, render, can control movement.

Restraining the wall at ceiling height can potentially deal with fewer or no piers, as would wall thickness.

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy having piers, in fact I need them as I'm using king post trusses in the roof so need to land them on piers at the back and pillars at the front.

The problem I have is that the building is going to be 9.7m in width, therefore wider than part A allows.
