Its a 4 cyl A9JB 1.3 petrol engine from what I can gather off the reg.

My sister has asked me about it on behalf of her friend who's been told it needs a new coil pack, the coil pack feeding all four plugs. Surely if a coil pack goes faulty, there'll be no HT generated to any of the plugs?

I repaired a Punto a few years back which had two coil packs. One had failed which left two cylinders lame.

If the power is lacking, surely a compression test is the first port of call?

If a coil is faulty ( there could be four) a fault code will be logged and stored. Some Fiestas had a coil pack that fed all four spark plugs, of course and any misfire was obvious - and starting was a problem.
I think this should be your first investigation, and also find if there is any service history?
A 2003 Fiesta probably had the 1225cc Zetec engine, which was a good ‘un and this had the 4 pack coil.

Many thanks John!

For the reg, the likes of ECP and BP websites show a single coil pack with x4 sockets for the plug leads. If I'm tasked to investigate, I'll plug my code reader in and see which codes are flagged up.

Just pull the plug leads off one at a time to see if one of them makes no difference. Usually the coil pack but could be a lead or a plug. If you do change the coil pack, change the leads as well.

Probably beneficial to check the plugs etc first and when it was last serviced.
Cant see it being the coil pack if it’s just down on power and not misfiring But you never know.

I had one of these for a while (same year as well). I bought it off my brother for £100 after I resumed driving!

I had the same issue. I changed the filters (fuel/air) and also cleaned the MAF sensor. I traced the issue down to the throttle position sensor which is on the throttle body itself -- that's where the wire (connected to the throttle pedal) goes. If the sensor is taking incorrect readings it'll alter how much fuel is injected.

I later had a similar issue on my current car (which uses the 'fly by wire' system). I had to take up a bit of slack on the wire to cure slow acceleration.

If it’s not misfiring and just down on power, check for a possible blocked air filter or exhaust system. You could always try a throttle body reset. Cant remember off the top of my head but do a search online. No special tools needed.

Apparently the car is going to be looked at by a neighbour who has a code reader so my sister has decided to butt out.

Thanks All for posting.
