240v to 110v convertion

It's an electric shaver to use abroad...about 40 amps I think.

most shavers are dual-voltage anyway.

I presume you mean 40 Watts unless you are shaving a woolly mammoth?

Yep, 40 Watts. I tried it last year and it didn't charge, so I don't think mine is. It's actually a beard trimmer to be precise and I couldn't find a dual voltage one.
 
When we transform down normally we use an isolation transformer like you will find in bathrooms. But when we want to transform up we often use auto-transformers. I have a good 60W one which was originally inside a florescent lamp.

But do remember USA is 60Hz and UK and Europe is 50Hz so it could end you going faster than it should.

The post above suggests it's a battery-operated rechargeable type, in which case the frequency difference should be of no consequence.
 
Missed the word charge. I had just seen shaver so yes 50/60hz should not be a problem. But transformers even auto transformers are heavy so for a holiday think I would wet shave.
 
Can't believe I said that. Since age of 21 now 60 I have grown a beard. Guess there are people who want to remove natural growth never understood why but sure there must be a reason?

I would have thought today most shavers would use a switch mode power supply and would be able to use anywhere between 100v and 250v either AC or DC?

For the odd old shaver one would also expect a change over switch 110v or 240v but I expect there must be the odd one which was built years ago without a change over switch.

But one must ask if it is really worth all the effort to find a transformer or if buying a new shaver able to work with what ever is found is a more appropriate method around the problem?
