hi,
i have been given a 3 phase 5000w diesel generator, but i only have a domestic house single phase.
I there some way i can use this with my house?
it does have a 230v output socket also but i have been told that this will only produce around 2400w, and i would like the 5000w or close too.
Regards
Gary

You will need to spread your loading as evenly as possible accorss the phases.

Do you plan to have your entire house on the generator or just selected equipment. My guess is with 5KW and that spread between phases you won't want any big loads on the generator.

What I would do is fit a 32A TP+N changeover switch. Feed one side from three 10A breakers in your consumer unit and feed the other side from the generator. From the output of that you can wire circuits for equipment to be supplied from the generator. Remember to size the neutrals appropriately since there won't be any neutral current cancelation when the switch is in the house supply position.

You should check the above advice through with someone familiar with local regs before proceeding. You may well need to install an earth rod for the generator.
