Hi I have just got a new pooter (because Microsoft kept giving dire warnings about XP support) I Just found out that works (word processor, spreadsheet, database, clip art etc) that always came bundled with windows is no longer there.

You need to buy Office to get anything more than the basic wordpad in 8.1! Anybody else found a solution to this?

I was thinking of loading works from my old disc but as support is ended I wonder if any vulnerabilities turn up will I be increasing the risk as no updates now. anyone used the new office is it worth the money or is there a third party bit of software that is good please?
 
openoffice.org will solve your problems.

Or use Googles online offerings
 
I prefer LibreOffice (libreoffice.org) to OpenOffice, to be honest.

But yeah, download and install either of those, and you'll have a fully featured office suite for free.
 
I have installed Office 2003 - 2010 without problems using Win 8.0 / 8.1 Pro.
Absolutely no problems.
I literally haven't noticed the difference twixt Win7 and Win 8, except for the really nice layout of the built in Apps,,, I am happy.

It never came bundled with Windows, and it's been dead and buried for over six years.
 
BTW - steer clear of office365, it only lasts for a year.

It does but its about more than that as it comes with exchange and SharePoint based website at least on some editions. They aim it at a small office that doesn't want to setup and support its own infrastructure. Its basically 2013 with skydrive and the above.


Having said that kingsoft, libre and open office are perfectly good substitutes these days unless you need access, but there are alternatives for that too.

Footprints, if you have or open a Microsoft account, a version of Microsoft Office is all online, including a basic amount of SkyDrive storage, and all free of charge.

It will also open and save documents on your PC, and includes the online applications:
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft Outlook and
Microsoft OneNote

If you type word online in your browser, you should end up here:

So you need never be lost if you want to read or edit an Office document.

As an aside, MS Office 97 still works fine as a suite of 32-bit Windows applications with Windows 8.1, and the 2007 Office converter program still integrates all modern Office documents with this tiny old dinosaur, which opens super fast, using a minuscule amount of memory and produces tiny native Office files, or modern versions. Oh, and Clippit still works if you don't turn it off!

As it happens I have just recently capitulated and gone with microsoft I decided on reflection to do that although it pains me to do so and buy the office from windows.

I looked at other options paid and free and weighed up the pros and cons in the end I decided that I wasn't going to take any risks with my shiny new computer :D so downloaded the microsoft one.
I was amazed I had read lots of horror stories of downloads going wrong and taking hours, the whole thing took no more than 10 mins from start to finish :shock: It all seems to be there so fingers crossed I will get on all right with it.

Must say though I am not a fan of 8.1 so far, windows has a very Big Brother approach to everything.
