Hello,
I have an Abacus alarm system which was installed in the early '90s and apart from having to renew the secondary cell battery in the control box a couple of times has been trouble free. Of late the associated smoke detector has alarmed a couple of times. I took it down and cleaned if and noticed that the expiry date was 1998. I bought a new one and fitted it (I short circuited the Anti Tamper wires as the new one doesn't have that facility). The pos and neg are connected to the right terminals as directed by the manufacturer. I smoke tested the sensor and two red leds started to glow but the siren doesn't work. Also to extinguish the LEDS I have to unscrew the sensor. Any clues?

Hello,
Thanks for coming back. The smoke detector is Activ Optical smoke detector code number C4416 with associted base Activ Diode base code number C4408D. They were supplied by Fire Protection On Line who referred me to the makers C- Tec.

Look forward to any suggestions and thanks in advance.

It won’t work ….you need either a menvier M12 or a texecom smoke detector …..normally fire alarm detectors won’t work unless it has a dedicated relay base rated @ 12v ….also better if it’s a non latching base ( if only 1 detector per zone ) otherwise it needs to power down to reset ( as you have found out ) the menvier M12 has this option

Thank you sparky! Very helpful. Wish i had joined this forum sooner!

Ok you could use that detector , with that base but you will still need to reset the smoke detector ..( on most newer panels you would use an output programmed as detector reset ) wired as an alternative to either the + or - supply , did you wire the alarm inputs on the relay connections ? No/ C…. Power being + 1 and 0v 5….

Hello “Sparky”
The base does not have terminals for NO, C, and NC. I twisted the tamper circuit wires together and connected the pos to terminal 1 and Neg to terminal 5
