Am I being scammed for a boiler replacement?

Hi, we've got a Baxi Heating Solo 2 50 PF gas boiler at our flat and it suddenly stopped working a few days ago. The agency claims that we 'tampered' with the exposed wires near the boiler knob (see attached pic) and that now it's beyond repair, and a new one has to be installed. Basically, the boiler just stopped turning on altogether - the 'Boiler on' lights comes up but the actual ignition never starts. Is the agency just trying to rip us off by making us pay for a long due replacement or is this something that is easily repairable?

Agency is scamming you. Reconnect that wore and see if things work.

It should go on the earth terminal.

BTW. Posting a thread in bold is very rude. You are no more important than the other posters on the forum.

A please and thank you wouldn't go amiss either.

@Dan Robinson thanks for the reply! The wire has been like this since we moved in and it always used to work until last week. The electrician did try to reconnect it but it still didn't work.

Cannot see video, but highly unlikely there is anything wrong that a RGI could not sort.
Can you hear the fan running?
Has a Gas Safe RGI visited? If so has he left any paperwork?

Does the (dodgy) paperwork, if any, mention a Durham Plumber ? ;)

Are those wires in terninal blocks or just pushed into what is a PCB mounted plug.

I am sure those wires should have cable mounted socket on them, A socket which mates with the PCB mounted plug. The arrow is pointing to a pin and not a receptable.

To me that looks like a bodge ( installer did not have the correct cable end socket ) which as created a very dangerous situation. The Earth has already dropped out. If the Neutral also fell out then with the Live still connected the boiler could becaome a electric shock hazard to anyone touching it ofr pipe wprk

Tell the agnecy that the installation is not safe and urgently needs to be corrected ( the correct cable end socket has to be fiitted )

Maybe the photo is deceptive, but to my eyes it looks as if those wires ought to be in a plug, yet instead they are just poked into the socket that the plug was made to plug into. The plug seems to be missing/ have been lost, so someone has botched the connections.

Bloody hell! Bernie has got something correct! ;)

That is seriously dodgy. There should be a corresponding plug, and those wires cannot be secure. But that is the earth wire, and will not affect the operation, but potentially safety.
Also, the pump should be wired into a second plug, and plugged in to the left of those wires.

Surely no actual RGI has visited.? Do you have a Landlords Gas Safety Certificate?

1. As stated above, those wires should not just be pushed in. They should be fitted to a special four pin plug, which is then inserted into the socket. As also stated above, there should be another plug (3 pin) to connect the pump.
2. The whole of these electrical connections should be enclosed in a white plastic cover to prevent accidental contact with mains voltages.
3. As you probably know, it is a legal requirement for the landlord to hold a gas safety certificate which must be renewed annually. It is a criminal offence for any landlord not to do this.

However, none of the above addresses the issue of when the damage was caused, nor by whom. It appears that as well as the electrical issues, the socket into which the cover screws is damaged. If you have an inventory for when you moved into the property, see if this damage is mentioned on it.

The plug is available (part No. 235620) and I think the cover is also available (part No. 230259). The parts would be less than £30.

I am not surprised the person who came to check the boiler would take that stance

What your boiler is missing is the screw termination for the cable- see picture
Is it any wonder the boiler is playing up? Wire connections very poor. Wire pushed into a receptacle is not a good idea, poor connection could result in burnt connections. Just as well it is low current the boiler runs at. Had it been a shower, the connections would have been toast by now

Under the kosh.... Just arrived at a bit of a head scratcher... Should be in the office.

Respite care home getting new pair of boilers and a hot water cylinder next week with 20 something zones of ufh control cabling to reverse engineer. Have to be done by Friday as they've spent the last 18 months organising a 5 day shut down ... No pressure

It is worse than that ! The wires are pushed into the cavity around the pin of a plug.
bernard has sussed out the departure from boiler manufacture plug in pcb wiring arrangement, great stuff

The wiring situation can be sorted out as mentioned by others above, looking at the current wiring set up the boiler pump activation is incorporated else where or it all could be installed incorrectly.

Manas,if your a tenant there will be a paper trail of boiler inspections. kind of doubt you moved in with the existing defects.
