Rishi Sunak faces fresh byelection as former Tory MP suspended

Blackpool South’s Scott Benton had suggested to undercover reporters he would be willing to break lobbying rules for money

Rishi Sunak is braced for another byelection after former Tory MP Scott Benton was suspended from the Commons for 35 days over his role in a lobbying sting.

MPs approved the suspension of the Blackpool South MP on Tuesday evening without the need for a vote.

The length of the suspension means that Benton is now facing a recall petition. If 10% of his constituents sign it, a byelection will be triggered in his seat.

It would take the number of byelections held during Sunak’s time as prime minister to 11.

How else do they pay for their duck houses. Bliar brought in uncontrolled expenses claims as a sop to MP’s who complained they were on low salaries, but it also bought loyalty.

Duck houses are shooting up in round my way with the current influx. The ducks can no longer afford and are migrating north.

It’s a bad look for MPs to have big salary increases, so for years they made it easy to claim loads on expenses and make money from lobbying.

We don’t have a government of MPs that’s works for us, we have a government of MPs that work for vested self interest.

The current Conservative government is just a puppet for libertarian “think tanks”

Tony Blair oversaw a period in this country when things really were far better than they are now.

It’s rather narrow minded to call Blair “Bliar” just because of his foreign policy.

I know you would like a “Corbyn style transformative Labour” but the fact is Labour cannot win power on that platform.

They couldn't catch a train either.

Back in the day you had to be aristocratic or have built up a personal fortune to become a tory MP, and local parties were responsible for selection of candidates. That has changed and central office impose candidates with no connection to the area who express the will of the party, sorry people, rather than being independent of thought and action. Then 30 pee Lee emerged and tore up the rule book.

To be fair Labour did/do the same.

Yes. He made sure there was no world recession, war in Europe and pandemic, didn’t he.

I think that is based on the WMD claim and the lie he went to war on. Still, not all bad, he has done better financially than any socialist PM. Ever.

There are some things worse than lying, including the manipulation of people to believe the country was about to be attacked. And then glibly say to the inquiry it made no difference because I (bliar) thought “ it was the right thing to do”. Shades of pooty there.

Public sector investment especially public health was better then, but his chancellor’s failure to curb the banks is a big part of our economic problems now.

Corbin got 37 per cent of the vote in 2017, he was a euro sceptic who instinctively supported leave as his voting record shows, and his economic policies were essentially levelling up. To take on the far right party that the Conservatives are b3coming you need distinctive policies to oppose them. Starmy’s copy edit paste approach might get him power this time but wont stop the shift to the right. Corbin was the wrong man for the job, a solid northern leader is needed, burnam who would get the private/ public sector balance right being the obvious choice.
