Are estimates actually ever used by trustworthy tradesmen?

I'm in a desperate situation and am trying to get someone at short notice, was considering a recommendation of a recommendation. Although he seemed knowledgeable, he only has a 1 month prescence on a fbook page.

Roof is leaking though and the next tradesman is going to take 1 month longer! I know what the general price is from general other quotes. Can I use these to argue if he takes the **** later?

yes, why not , i do it all the time - BUT before the work starts or even before i purchase an item

Also depends on what is found i guess , I had roof repairs , the guy gave me a quote , but specifically said - that is assuming we dont find xxxxx when we start work , which in my case was rotten timber ends .....

xxx is selling it cheaper ... sometimes a price match on a product

BUT whenever i have had a quote for works , thats very expensive rarely do they change - just tell me to go somewhere else ...... which i have done and had really good work.

If its time critical , then maybe thats a premuim to pay

also if available immediately - then that may be a sign to consider as well, my experiance is good trades are difficult to get and have to wait sometime , although a leaking roof is a problem on time
 
Lol. Yeah I know, the bigest problem is hes new, so a bit risky. Isn't busy, because he's new.
Can we all agree that estimates are at least not inherently risky then? I'm not used to them, only had one once before from a really bad cowboy so maybe I am biased.

An estimate is just that a best guess , and can change
a Quote is a price to do the job, i have had people quote for a job and run over the time expected , and kept to the original price , although i have paid extra to a plasterer who did an exceptional job , and on the last day expected to be just him, but he had to bring in 2 people to get the job done on time.

Never worked on estimates.
But I always had a clause in my contracts stipulating that any unexpected hidden problems might grant a quote review.
With larger jobs, usually customers don't mind you digging around to expose potential disaster areas.
