Arris rails

Afternoon,
I'm about to erect a fence using wooden posts which don't come with holes for the arris rails.
What is the usual method?
Making the holes myself or using metal brackets?

Cut slots with auger bit and clean with chisel looks best, but metal plates are 100 times easier and quicker to fit!

So pro's drill / chisel a hole and DIYers use the brackets?

Plenty of pros use brackets for repair jobs, it's entirely up to you and how you want it to look.
