Hi

Just about to start the fire for the winter in new old bungalow - noticed protruding rope in surround, and some suspect possible asbestos board up in chimney...

Likely going to get a sample and get it tested... but what do you all think? Might be hard to get a sample for the upper chimney part (but it being more solid material, would it be an issue if the fire was lit?)

Pictures 1&2 - right hand side of surround
Pictures 3&4 - left hand side of surround - not the rope appears a different texture towards bottom in 4th picture
Picture 5 - this is the view looking up toward chimney - not the 2 thinner boards on right hand side which is facing out into the room, potential asbestos boards?

Difficult to tell without it being tested. For peace of mind if nothing else.

Asbesto is fine if left undisturbed, it's when it's airbourne it's dangerous.

Looks like asbestos rope to me, unless it is post 1999 then it might be glassfibre.

could well be ceramic fibre rope, (probably would not have disintegrated had it been asbestos). Not at all sure though and would not want to be disturbing it every day in the living room until I was absolutely sure.

Asbestos rope was being installed well into the 1980s

There was a piece of asbestos rope outside my house, called the council to remove it. They apparently came, and failed to spot it. The elderly neighbour next door swept it up!
