Asbestos Roof Sheets

Hi,

I've recently carefully dismantled our old garage roof and building. I've managed to dispose of the garage shell but am now stuck with 10 sheets of 142x130 asbestos roofing.

I want to either dispose of this at the local dump or have it collected. Are there polythene asbestos bags this large? obviously I don't want to break the sheets up. Is my only other option wrapping it in 1000 gauge polythene?

We're in the London Borough of Bromley if anyone has any advice/experience of this locally!?

142 x 130 what?
Our Local council used to allow disposal of it in the manner you suggest, but you will have to have it in manageable parcels. The rules on it's disposal seem to often change so probably best to ask your council.

and Disposal Service.
2.) Take it to Waldo Road recycling centre in your
own vehicle.
3.) Pay for a specialist company to remove it.

Both options 1 & 2 certain requirements have to be fulfilled prior to disposal BUT personally I’d choose option 1 as
a.) It’s Free.
b.) Same requirements for option 1 as it is for
option 2 (almost) & NO loading/unloading.
c.) 100% No Asbestos fibre's floating around in
my car.

I’ve also read a little further & this is what they say about taking it to Waldo Road recycling centre yourself…….
“Asbestos
There is a container for cement-bonded asbestos. Once at the centre, you will need to contact the site staff to arrange for the container to be unlocked before you unload this material. Please note, it will only be accepted if it is put in at least two bags that have been sealed to prevent dust escaping.”

With 10x sheets the staff may well refuse you on entry due to the size of the sheets & the quantity or try to charge you.
I’d call the council monday morning & check with them if you choose to take them to the recycling center yourself……You might just save yourself a load of hassle for a quick phone call

I personally thought you HAD to get a professional company in to remove any asbestos or leave it where it is, so I’ve learnt something myself.

Thanks everyone, sorry the sheets are 142cm x 130cm. Branty, thanks very much, I had read this my main problem is wrapping the sheets up as they are so large. Obviously I want to avoid breaking them as much as possible. I'll give the council a call first thing Monday.

Screwed…….. in B & Q/Wickes/Decorating centers/Amazon they sell polythene rolls for using as dust sheets while decorating that are 25m x 4m relatively cheap at £13.50 on Amazon, unfortunately it isn’t 1000 gauge but with the measurements you gave in your original post of 142cm x 130cm, I think a couple of these polythene rolls & a few rolls of sellotape, you’d have enough to wrap them 3x easily, as long as they are taped up tightly they should collect them, once you’ve taped few warning signs on them as per HWCDS requirements.

Even if you have to wrap them a couple more times for the cost of another 1/2 polythene rolls & more sellotape it’ll still be a LOT cheaper than a specialist company being hired in. HWCDS do request no sheets to be broken up just to be bagged BUT any smaller pieces can be double bagged & sealed for disposal.

Screwed…..I’ve just found this after searching 1000 gauge polythene sheeting & 1x roll is all you need after some calculation.

1000 gauge, 25m x 4m x 250mu, clear, 2-3 day delivery.

1x Roll = £66.73
plus either
1x Collection charge = £10 from Maidenhead
1x Delivery charge = £45

Without spending hours searching mate this is what I found quickly online but I’d phone around some local builders merchants & see what price they can do for you or if they do a price match.

Black dpc sheet reinforced with old paper or cardboard at the edges should be fine and a lot cheaper.
