Someone has asked me if I know which engine in this Gen of Astra is the most reliable.

They're thinking of buying a 16 plater.

They're worried about picking one with a turbo engine that could fail prematurely, like the Ecoboom.

Any ideas please?
 
Ford ecoboost was a coolent pipe and car was recalled and pipe swapped for rubber. Just a pipe caused all that trouble.
All cars have there problems it seems no matter which brand you choose

Makes a mockery of all the alleged 'testing' new models are put through :rolleyes:

Can't really run a car for years as part of a test.
Same goes for many items.
Real world is only way to test unfortunately.
 
Well I don't know about now, but they used to put running gear into an existing bodyshell , often stretched and drive them for hundreds of thousands of miles. They were known as test mules.

Having said that, the Qashqai was the first car (I think) to be 100% designed and stress tested by CAD.

There are a few engines which are ultra reliable. Some Honda and Toyota lumps are pretty much unburstable.

The A+ series was not known to fail.

Is there an engine in that Astra Gen that is just a bog standard normally aspirated 1.4? Call me old fashioned if you must!!

The PSA PureTech (EB) engine can fail in the same way as an Ecoboom - as I have just discovered!

A couple of months ago, on my 2017 C3, I started getting intermittent engine warning lights under heavy acceleration, that then disappeared. Didn't think much of it, but a couple of weeks later, I had a recall notice.
Apparently, the wet timing belt (same stupid idea as the Ecoboom), disintegrates, contaminates the engine oil and gums up the oil feed and channels. This in itself may not have even demanded a recall, but due to the turbo, the brake assistance is created by a driven vacuum pump - the filter to which is tiny. Hence, loads of gunk blocks filter, vacuum pump fails, and unexpectedly you lose breaking assistance!

I now have a new timing belt, oil pump and vacuum pump, courtesy of Citroen - not bad for a 2017 car. But I'm left wondering when will this happen next.

Luckily for the Astra, I don't believe it was ever supplied with the EB engine, although the Corsa, Crossland, Grandland and Mokka were...
