heres what I have to work with...... ....... Austrian socket. The wires: black, blue, green/yellow - the markings: ´O` ´P` and ´a circle with some kind of tree in it`! ( ).

why not look at an existing socket? (as you are in Austria) but its a pretty good bet the green/yellow goes to the circle with the tree in it

already took off every socket in the flat - no go, because, basically, NO SYMBOLS! managed to get as far as the tree part too, so have now opted for the ´ibble obble black bobble` variety of wiring. Seems to work.

Don't they speak German in Austria? I'd guess the P is Live (Live Wire = Phasenleitung) and the tree symbol is Earth

However Neutral is Nullleiter (which doesn't start with an "O")

:?

if its a german style socket (see pic below) it doesn't matter which way round you connect live and neutral (since the plug is reversable anyway) so you just have to find the earth. This should be easy enough with a multimeter (the earth connects to the side clips, i bet its the "tree" symbol but it would be a good idea to check)

a german schuko socket
