Been using AVG free for years, it's fine. I double up and use Defender too
been using and advising people to use for decades now - be careful, its easy to select the free trial version and NOT the free version
However, what windows version are you running, some of the later versions and updates on windows are ok on there own
i used to regularly review this site to see how the various software performed ,
and used the main providers when ever i setup a pc for people

Avira & Avast often came out near the top
along with the paid for versions - Norton, mcafee which often was supplied with a trial on new PC's
