Hi, hope you're all keeping well.

We're having the bathroom ceiling boarded and skimmed next week but want to get the wiring sorted for an extractor fan to be fitted.

The light fitting is accessible from the loft, but the switch is under some boarding that's a bit of a pain to be lifted. Is it possible for the extractor fan to be wired solely from the light fitting, without having to be wired to the light switch? We'd actually prefer a fan without a timer, that switches off when you turn the light off, so I'm hoping that simplifies things?

Being a DIY novice I'll be getting an electrician in to do the work but it'd be good to know how easy it's likely to be before booking them in.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Simple to wire a fan from the ceiling lights terminals ,but it's not likely to do much if it's turned off when you leave the room and switch the light off. You should consider having a fan with a run on timer installed by your electrician.

Thanks @terryplumb

Is it possible to install one with a run-on timer directly from the light fitting, or will the light switch have to be involved in some way?

Only reason we were thinking of getting one without a timer was to avoid making too much noise at night, as our bathroom backs on to next door's baby's bedroom.

@jertum it depends on how your light fitting is wired. If you have loop in at the light fitting then you should have all of the connections that you need.

If you think a ceiling fan might be noisy, then consider an in-line fan mounted in the roof space above (assuming you have such a thing).
