Beamed Ceiling

Hi everyone. We are looking to buy a new-build house that has beamed ceilings in many of the rooms. The beams are softwood, pine I guess. I don't think they are structural. We have the choice as have them painted or not. I assume that unpainted means no finish at all, just bare wood. They look good just left unpainted - even though they are just pine. My question is; is it OK to have bare wood? Any disadvantages or problems leaving them like that?
 
It's fine to leave them bare.

The joists in house roofs are not painted nor are they sealed (don't look treated either) so be fine
 
I don't think it's ok to have beamed ceilings in any house younger than 200 years old. Unless it's a pub.

Definitely not knotty pine. :eek:

on my point about leaving them bare, it wouldnt hurt to oil and wax them to seal them and ensure there current look for years to come, but depends on the condition of htem currently etc etc
 
A new build that is actually an old shell? o_O
I don't think even the most silver-tongued latin gypsy libra car salesman turned estate agent would pull that one off.

Simply new, planed, timber as far as I can tell.

What sort of oil/wax treatment would be suitable?

I think it may depend on the wood type, but clear Danish oil to preserve it and then clear bees wax to seal it
 
Pah. Architects. :rolleyes: I don't think they know what they've done, or doing, or will do.
