Best fixing for lath and plaster walls

Got a tarty glass shelf thing to put up in the bathroom. Lath and plaster wall (clad in that PVC stuff), I've only got 1 joist in a position to do anything useful.

So, what do people reckon is the best option (Apart from putting a noggin in)

Expanding metal things (like these http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p27216 )
Toggle bolts (like these- I hate them but they do have their uses) (http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p14315)
Chuck a 2" x 10 screw through to pick up a lath and hope for the best
Accidentally break the shelf (once shops are closed) and try and swerve the job til she loses interest

Matter of trial and error , if you just screw straight into wall you are likely to get a fix by hitting a lath, course screw thread helps to hold in the pvc walling. Don't use any power driver just screw hand tight. Will depend on the style of shelf mount. Without info just guess work.

Oh yeah, that would have been a helpful piece of data- doh!. I've got the ones that came with the shelf (which look cheap and nasty) or I've got these http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p40922. They both have 2 vertical holes in each bracket, the cheap and nasties have a circular backplate about 50mm diameter which might be a slightly better loadspreader. Phone is AWOL at the mo or I'd attach pics :(
