My licence for one machine expires in the near future. I'm bombarded with "bargain" offers to renew, including one from Kaspersky. Any snags with cheapies?

Never mind cheapies, I've always used free ones in the past.
Since Windows 10, however, I rely only on their inbuilt Windows Defender, though I also use Malwarebytes (free) and CCleaner (free).

Touch wood, I have never had any problems, but then I'm careful which web sites I visit and simply delete emails I don't know the provenance of.

Thanks, I'm still on Win 7 (great), the cheapest Kasp offer on eBay is about £7, seems too good to be true.

Kaspersky is a PITA, it was responsible for my pc boot times being 2 minutes plus (until I found how to stop that).
IT pops up with crappy boxes advertising itself.

Touch wood - no viruses though.

I too would never use Kaspersky. Neither would I use Norton. Both are big lumps of software, take over your computer and are difficult to remove.
Oh, and expensive!

I have in the past used Avast, when I had (the far superior) Windows 7. Avast was free and I never had any problems with it.

Thanks JBR, £7 expensive?
ps: as a Yorkshireman I admire the task you've set yourself, any converts?

And if tha dus owt fa nowt dun it fa tha sen !!
great stuff.
See all, hear all, say nowt.
Eat all, drink all, pay nowt.
And if ever tha does owt for nowt,
Allus do it for thissen.

The Yorkshire national anthem.

Avast is not bloated and takes over things.
Most AV software will take over your pc, its how it keeps it safe.

The free windows one works fine too and does not advertise itself like avast/kaspersky does.

When I said that Norton takes over your computer, I meant that I found it difficult to remove when I once tried it out.
Yes, Avast was far less intrusive in that respect.

Upgrading to Win10 will give you Defender and that is fine. Microsoft update their definition files every 4 hours and is just as good as a product as any other.

Though I appreciate that's a personal opinion and others buy in to third-party products by personal preference but usually it's on the misconception that you get "better" security.
