Best way of getting rid of tree stump (that’s out of the ground)?

Dug up this bad boy after a battle…but it’s too big & heavy to move without the digger and I need to get rid.

I think all the dirt will blunt my little chainsaw.

All I can think of is getting an axe and swinging way until it’s in more manageable pieces…so looking for other suggestions please!?

Hmmmmm if only you had a trailer, even better if the trailer had a set of ramps! Winch would be a bonus, wouldn't even need the digger to load it.





If you're going to do anything else like that in the future, get a thumb for the digger

That was what I was thinking, but trying to avoid the manual labour if possible!

Trouble is I need to lift it into a green / timber waste skip at the tip, so it needs to be in smaller bits.

Never seen a 'thumb' before...thankfully this is a once and done event.

I tried that to get some of the roots cut and didn't have much success as the smaller roots just clung onto the dirt. (140 bar pressure washer). Managed to blunt my new chain pretty quick. I might just buy a couple of spare chains and just sacrifice them for the great good :)

I know that you say you have tried, but it will work. It will need to be done repeatedly before the soil comes off.
 
I dog out a Biggie, by hand, took me weeks. Winched it onto my trailer, took it to the tip and they sent me down the bottom bit (where the bin lorries empty) into a huge building that absolutely stank - we manhandled it off the back onto the floor. On the way out they gave me a weighbridge ticket - the stump weighed in at 600kg!

The problem is shifting it, even now it’s too heavy for my digger to lift…I think because of the dirt attached more than anything.

Also, knowing the waste disposal folks around here, I expect it’ll just end up dumped in a ditch or country road.

Yeah, I probably need to persist with this a bit more. I might just leave the hose running on it for an hour or two to see if that helps loosen the caked on dirt.

When we moved into this house, there was a massive conifer in the garden - probably 10-12” thick. I chopped it down and dug below the roots to get it out. It had three main roots nearly as thick as the trunk itself. They went a fair way. I chopped the stump out and left the long roots in the ground. A year or so later I was digging in that area and came across one of the old roots. It had completely broken down so I’d say to you….dig a hole and bury it - it’ll eventually break down.

Another idea - look out for a grab lorry and bung the driver a few quid.
