Hi All,

I am performing a self build and have got a plan for opening the corner of the extension with 2 seperate bifold setups around the corner. In the middle holding up the corner there will be a 150mm vertical steel beam with steelwork then running off the top horizontally to each wall at the other end to form a lintel to hold 3 brick courses above the bifolds. The SE prefers to have the steel upright in the corner in the internal face of the brickwork.

My question is surely this internal steel would not work as the bifolds will be sat on the external face and how would the bifolds support themselves at the far end in front of the beam and also how would we hide the beam?

If I put the vertical beam on the external face instead how do you then prevent cold bridging as it would add a lot to its thickness adding insulation and a metal covering?

I have tried to find pictures or a detail of an installation like this and not getting anywhere!

Many thanks in advance

What does your designers detail show?

This is the thing, I don't really want to go through an architect just for this one design, I would rather just have a one sided Bi-fold and return the wall slightly than pay that cost on top. This headache all started when my Mrs said wouldn't a corner bifold without a 665mm brick column be nice!

God, this video is a cantilever roof which would cost a fortune in my case (no steel at all), I have been told I need a permanent structural steel of 150mm in the corner to hold up the roof, my question is wheter this should be on the inner or outer skin, and how to design the thermal aspect and bi-fold connection to the steel, I am swaying for it to be on the external skin however need a detail if someone has one to hand.

If not I will have to bite the bullet and get an architect involved!

Just received a call from a bifold company, detail for anyone that needs to do this is steel either goes into the centre of the wall or inner skin, outside of steel is built up in wood off the steel to allow bifold fitment with some insulation, inner is plasterboarded, however to actually have a detail to work off would be good, i.e. DPM, etc, I am guessing it will be the same as cladding a wall to be honest.
