Hello all,

Just wondering if there are any experts out there can recommend some brands?

Just off the top of your head, which alarms are considered to be good, and relatively easy to fit?

How much would one expect to pay for a decent self install kit?

Hi ,

Texecom would be my choice.They are readily available and easy to program and use.They produce panels , passives and sounders etc.

£100 should get enough kit for a 2 / 3 bed house .

Ive read a few posts on here and i think im going to buy a Texecom.

Ive seen many online stores selling separates im guessing its a pick n mix system where i can pick whichever sensors i need for my setup (limited to the connections on the panel).

Once ive bought the kit, is it just a matter of running all the cables and connecting it together?

Was thinking of

5 pirs: upstairs landing, downstairs landing, living room, dining room and kitchen

3 door sensors

Sound like over kill?
 
Why not get hold of the manual for the Texecom Veritas , have a read and see if you understand the terminology etc.

There are also some other sites that specialise in security alarms and there are a couple of online guides to help.

There are plenty of online shops that will sell a complete Texecom kit for less than a ton.

probably not " quality " equipment - try and spend a little more and it will pay for itself in the long run
 
Agreed.

Just a starting point ...update the Reflex to Prestige...Veritas to Premier etc. depends on how much you want to spend.

I had a look at my sisters alarm setup (by a pro) and the wiring was amazing!

What are the tricks to running and hiding cables.
 
Like we going to tell you that. We'd have no livelihoods left :wink:

To be honest the best trick is to wire the system when all floorboards can be lifted and walls chased etc. Obviously though in a house that is not usually possible. If you have no choice but to run surface. Lift the edge of the carpets remove a line of underlay and run the cables in the void. Stapled or clipped. Staples are frowned upon though. As for getting through floors floor to ceiling wardrobes/airing cupboards are always good for concealment

i did a quick google, and one i found with prices it came over 100 for what the OP wanted (texecom kit)
but as the others have said (in a round about way) you do get what you pay for

take your time,look at the install as a whole as well as when thinking about running individual cables( would you get another cable through that hole later or is it easier to run them all at once ),single cables can go in the gap between the gripper rod and the skirting,dont make holes too big but dont make em too small either


enjoy yourself ( jobs always go nicer if you have a smile )

it`s a start but it takes years of practise to be able to turn up and do the job in a day so to repeate myself

you should NEVER under any cirumstances do that, no exceptions

for those who dont know why (and maybe saxondale) when the carpet fitter comes along he also has a very sharp utility knife, cable v utility knife, knife 1 cable 0

not to mention how are you going to put 2 cables there (you can't)

you SHOULD lift the carpet up 2-3 feet at the very most, cut the underlay away from the INSIDE of the carpet gripper (about 1cm wide) fix your cable down, relay carpet, use blunt bolster chiesel to secure carpet (bolster chiesel goes where saxondale said to put cable)
if you are good / quick the carpet will not shrink back
