Brickwork and small gap between mine and neighbours extension

Looking for some advice.
The neighbour has built a single storey extension and now there is a gap of approx a foot between the 2 external walls. Ours is brickwork - hers is I think is breeze block rendered with a coating of black stuff about a foot high from the floor.

My question is should coat my bricks with something (it looks like bitumen but i'm not sure) to help keep my brick waterproof as the are obviously doesnt get any sun.

Yes a nice landscape from the Romantic period, or even a copy of the atmospheric "The Fighting Temeraire" would look great - so much better than black tar.
