I’ve just built a double storey extension to the side of the house. I installed a Kidde dual smoke + Carbon mono alarm, one upstairs and one downstairs. Now I’ve 4 bed house (and its not being rented).

I had the pleasure of building reg inspector doing the final visit and after calling his office, I found that my current smoke detector is not correct and I should have “interlinked SD”.

Now I don’t really want to do any wiring as ready fully painted/decorated:
- can someone please help with what the building reg for Bristol/England
- which alarm is best?
- do i need both smoke and carbon mono? Or one of each please?
- can I use one of those wireless smoke alarms?

apologies if i missed an existing thread and bit lost with all the information overload.

You can use wireless, but they should be mains powered with a battery back up

The required standard is Grade D - LD3 - D means battery backup (either sealed battery [D1] or replaceable [D2]) and LD3 is detectors to escape routes (landing and hallways).

You don't need Co2 or heat detectors, but the above standard is a minimum standard, as more detectors in other areas may be beneficial.

Didn't the electrician told you about the smoke alarms???
Or did you do all yourself?

electric work was part of the contract so was sourced via builders and getting some of the bits done during the first lockdown were just almost impossible. I did not do anything myself...

thanks @woody ,
So i need 1 or 2 please?

is there any particular brand or something at screwfix you could suggest please to meet these guidelines?

Acio Ei140 range
Smoke, heat detectors that interlink and you can also expand coverage with radio base unit to ensure all detectors are interlinked in property. These devices can be purchased from screwfix.

They are a good quality brand, but all their products look dated and industrial and some are just unreasonably large and I would not like to look at them on my ceiling. But it's down to taste.
Can you suggest any other hopefully not looking from 1920s?

I tend to specify Aico for work as the quality, reliability and ease of maintenance is there. And I've never really had need to investigate others.

At home I have Fibaro and it was mainly for the looks and smart functions. But these not directly interlinkable without an additional hub or devices.

Have a look at www.safelincs.co.uk who will stock suitable quality alternatives.

With the Radio link back plates , you need a permanent feed & neutral , if the Lighting is done with a 3 plate system , ie feed in / out & Switch wire , you May be able to fit a Detector & Radio linked Backplate by fishing a Cable under a Floor Void to the position you’re happy with - job sorted
