I'm replacing a espag lock that broke, bought the wrong size lock online apparently as it's much larger in width than the last one and doesn't fit in the hole in the window frame for it. Is there any reason I couldn't just make the hole wider with a drill or will that mess it up? I can see a bit of support behind there, will I be able to drill through that ok or should I just pay the return postage and get a smaller one? Pics of the locks and the hole, arrows show the direction I'd need to extend it.

the working face looks nothing like what your taking out
also the spindle to face measurement looks very different so would say 100% no---
but just a guess

Personally, put it down to experience and remeasure and re order.

You'll likely find that there are other internal issues such as it not sliding properly or catching or screws in the wrong place etc.

I fitted one but it was an unknown brand I had already in window that had gone rusty and jammed.
I used a firm online, and after sending a pictures and online chat, I was advised to buy the universal one they had as best match. Fitted fine although I had to fit 4 new locking mounts to frame which was easy following the plastic ridge lines. Seemed to all line up first time so easy job.

Thanks all, I sent it back in the end, asked if they had any that would be correct and was told they didn't have any that were the same but I reckon a lot of them would have actually fit fine. Got one from amazon that looked ok (with free returns in case it didn't fit) and it went on fine, I still need to move the mounts as my drill is too big to fit in the gap but I tested them in place and all good!
