6 months ago I pulled out the washing machine and found this (see images) it’s a shiny, sparkling sort of grey dust. I have absolutely no idea what it is but I want to know what’s causing it. Then today, we are replacing the washing machine and it’s back just like in the images. Despite being fully cleaned 6 months ago.
Any help in identifying this bizarre dust/deposit would be greatly appreciated, I just want to rule out that it isn’t dangerous.

Graphite from washing machine motor brushes?
That is a very likely answer, I didn’t think of that as I’ve never seen it before. We’re just replacing the machine with a direct drive so I guess we can confirm this in a few months!

Thank you very much!

Seems a lot for the brushes and I believe newer machines may not even have brushes
Maybe the Belt on its way out

Is that a dead mouse?
Haha! It certainly looks like, but no it’s just some dust I was mid way through cleaning when taking the pics lol

it’s crazy how dirty it gets back there, especially as it was done 6 months ago

That’s one hell of a volume of dust to come from a belt.....when the machine vobrates on spin or whatever, is it shaking something out of the wall?
Soot from a boarded up chimney back, for example?
John :)
