I need to replace a neighbour’s Selmar Turbo 12 battery charger. Ive borrowed it on more than one occasion but I think I’ve burnt it out. I also think it is quite old as I’ve not found another one in any online search. It’s 12 Amp. Can anyone suggest something equivalent I can get? Nb, I wish I’d just bought my own one to start with! Thanks!

ARe you sure it's burnt out? (what makes you think so?) does it light up and the needle move?
There is not actually a lot inside a battery charger so it may be able to be repaired, is there somewhere near you that you can take it?

have a look at Argos, http://www.argos.co.uk/product/3795185 is 12A but the one you mention is actually only 8 amp so a cheaper one should do - discuss it with your neighbor.

So this http://www.argos.co.uk/product/3798917 is more likely to be a direct replacement.
or even https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOCHE-8A...743260&hash=item5b2e6953cc:g:hvAAAOSwbsRa2hjj

Thank you very much for your reply and for the links. The needle flickers but there was a terrible burning Bakelite smell and now whether I connect it to the flat battery I was trying to charge or a charged battery in another car, there is no difference. The issue may be that I connected it at the same time as the battery was on trickle charge and it seems to have fried it. The trickle charge was to try and bring the battery back to life as the Selmar charger was not detecting any life. Probably not a smart move...

I know these items are still sold, but I've never used one in more years than I can remember. I've always found a properly functioning alternator makes for a reliable starter in any weather & both our cars, a 12yr. old daily driver & an 31yr. old that sometimes sits for up to a month between usage, are parked outside. As for batteries, I never invest in more than a standard item that meets the vehicle manuf. specs.
NB: I still have an old 12v/6v high/low rate charger than is around 36 yrs. old & has been loaned to neighbours on occasions!
