We're sound insulating an upstairs floor (see other thread: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/how-to-sound-insulate-upstairs-wooden-floor.516049/#post-4293578 ), and are thinking to put down something like 10mm acoustic underlay over hardboard over floorboards.
The existing carpet and underlay is a bit shabby, but is clean, doesn't smell, isn't falling apart.
Is there any reason not to leave it down and put the new underlay on top?
We can afford to lose the few mm headroom, have no problems with skirting and doors, and it just seems a bit bonkers to be throwing away a couple of layers that will help with sound insulation, and that are already cut to size and on site.
Cheers for your thoughts, Stephen
