Hi all,

I’m looking to get my carpets changed as cheaply as possible. This is purely because where I’m staying is a short term solution however the carpets desperately need to be changed because firstly they STINK and secondly it’s a very old fashioned and busy pattern.
Anyway, my max budget is £500 including materials. I have been quoted £180 for carpets to be fitted given that the current ones are removed (this I can do myself as a lot of the carpet is coming away from the edges anyway and would be relatively easy).
I have found a reasonable felt back carpet at £4.99 per m2 with a 6.5mm thickness. And current square footage of areas to be done is roughly 27m2 minus the winding stair case.
My question is… can I skip the underlay? And carpet grippers? Should I just purchase the carpet alone? Will I regret skipping the underlay? Do I need new carpet edging (the metal strips) or can the existing ones be used when the carpets are fitted? Currently the carpet has a layer of underlay from what I can see however it’s so thin and so is the current carpet (this was probably fitted in the 80s).
I will be here for a maximum for 3 months so not really too bothered about maintaining longevity of the carpet etc. I just need a quick solution.
Any and all advice is welcome to a complete newbie. Cheers guys

If your only going to be there 3 months, crack on. I would however use gripper. The existing trim pieces may be okay.
