Carpet underlay for laminate?

I am in the process of lifting a living room carpet to put down laminate. There is already a very good quality underlay on top of a plywood floor. There is no damp. It seems crazy to lift it and replace with something else. Would this work?
 
Thank you so much for answering. The underlay is 5 mil thick Rubber to the underside and a hessian backing on top. The laminate is 8 ml.
 
I did exactly that once that a landlord didn't want to pay for new underlay.
No problem and that laminate is still there, 10 years later.
 
Won't it feel bouncy?
A friend at work told me about a friend.... who laid laminated over carpet and presumably underlay. It was like walking on a trampoline apparently?
I guess one way would be to allow enough time to lay some boards and order laminated underlay if needed
 
The underlay you describe is wholly unsuitable to fit laminate flooring ontop of, you need to use fibreboards or something like Duralay Multitex or TimbermateXL if on a concrete floor.
 
As Dave said. Why would you lay laminate on Top of carpet underlay?

just buy the right gear and do it right. Prob cost you £50-80
 
If the 5mm underlay were to compress excessively then the joint sections of the laminate boards would be under considerable stress and might snap.
