Change a upvc door lock gearbox

The lock on our upvc door is starting to play up. The first thing that went was the latch spring (?) on the top part then yesterday it was hard to turn the key to lock/unlock.

Am I right in saying that what I need to do first is to remove the upright metal strip that runs up the door then remove handle and gearbox mechanism to get the dimensions of it then match up a replacement and fit that?

Yep, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with how to remove it , just any really short screws put back in when you come across them or the mechanism will fall off the rail , once handle, spindle and cylinder barrel are removed , and all the longer screws , the gearbox will come off with the rail.
I'm guessing it was hard to lock/unlock when the door is actually open? Otherwise it may just be adjustment it needs
