hi my son keeps forgetting to lock the door when he goes out , can I change the upvc handle to one that you need a key to open the door to get in. As I get home from work late at nite to find the house unlocked , anybody could just walk in , thanks

lever handles on a front door have always been stupid.

You need a split spindle, so when the door shuts the external handle won’t retract the latch.

So that means a new multipoint lock and new handle.

As for brand / model, that is dependent on the upvc brand and profile.

Im not sure if strike plates are the same or not.

it’s not a DIY job really, too many variables.

You might be best contacting one of the upvc repair specialists that are around - I’m not sure if cloudy to clear would do it.

cost wise…could £200 - £300 maybe shout at your son more

It may just be a case of changing the handles. Depends on how old the lock is , as it may already have a split spindle. Take the existing door handle off and look through the hole where the spindle went, if there is two holes , One above the other than you a aplot spindle lock. Then it's just a case of buying a new ' lever/pad handle set, so you'll need the distance between the centre of the spindle and the centre of the circular part of the lock barrel ( this is known as the PZ,) you will.also need the distance between the fixing screws.
If you haven't got a split spindle currently then you may be able.to get a replacement lock from the same manufacturer with split spindle and then replace handles as above.
If.you can't find a replacement with split spindle, I believe yale do a universal multipoint lock with split spindle which comes with a new lock keep...fits most doors but beware ..not all.
If you do need a new door lock , either replacement or the yale one , you will need to know the backset, which is the distance from the face of the lock to the centre of the spindle hole
