Hi everyone,

wondering if anyone can help! I removed the gas fire and surround we had on our chimney breast and found this underneath.

I know that the central brick part (the bit that looks newer/highlighted in green) was installed around 20 years ago (house is 1960s).

I want to remove the new bit, but it looks like the original lintel has a notch taken out of it (or is this normal?)

We think that if we remove the new bit, we’re going to need to replace the whole original lintel as well?

Does anyone know if that’s normal or not, or have an ideas as we’re clueless lol

thank you in advance!

Knock out the new bit and inspect the old lintel
They tend to be big old lumps with steel bars through.
If it looks cracked or badly damaged maybe fit something under to strengthen
