connecting a generator to my home for back up power

question, is there any other safe way other then the use of a transfer switch, or running many drop cords to wire a generator to a panel box to supply power to my home, if so how?

You must have a means of disconnecting from the normal main supply, this is to prevent the generator backfeeding onto the mains, which is extremely dangerous.

So your options are a manual or automatic change over switch. Whatever you do would have to be agreed with the electrical supply company.
