"Boris Johnson turned away from polling station without proper ID"

FT.com

"Former army officer Adam Diver wrote on X that, having “spent 27 years in the Army”, he was “gutted” to be “turned away at the door” as he tried to vote in Lancashire as part of the local elections in England and Wales.

In response, veterans minister Johnny Mercer apologised on the social media site, writing: “I am sorry about this. The legislation on acceptable forms of ID came out before the veterans ID cards started coming out in January this year."

"Conservative MP Tom Hunt said he had also been unable to vote in person after having misplaced the necessary ID"

"Legislation introduced by Johnson in 2022 and brought in by Rishi Sunak’s government last year stipulates that every person must bring valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, in order to cast a ballot in all local and general elections.

A voter authority certificate (VAC) is an acceptable form of ID in the absence of another approved document.

On Thursday people complained on social media of trying and failing to use their valid professional ID, of having no valid ID because their passport was being renewed, and of witnessing elderly people who were confused about the rules being sent home."

Amusingly, you can take a postal vote, completed and in its sealed envelope, to a polling station, but you and the officer are obliged to fill in and sign a form saying your name and address, and saying if you are a campaigner.

If you post it, it is not accompanied by such a form. So anybody could have put it in the post box.

In the past 5 years, there is no evidence of large-scale electoral fraud.

between 2019 and 2023, 10 allegations of electoral fraud led to convictions and the police issued 4 cautions.

"According to the commission about 14,000 people were unable to vote in the May 2023 local elections in England as a result of the new rules."

Stretching the truth a little, 1462 allegations of fraud resulting in 10 convictions & 4 cautions.

In the past 5 years, there is no evidence of large-scale electoral fraud.
Of the 1,462 cases of alleged electoral fraud reported to police between 2019 and 2023, 10 led to convictions and the police issued 4 cautions.
Most cases either resulted in the police taking no further action or were locally resolved by the police issuing words of advice.

We have a " version" of democracy in this country. You can get in power with 35% of the electorate. Because another 35 % do not vote. Average turnout is at most 65% which suits those with vested interests. Australia has better electoral rules and turnout.

Apparently some labour MP / shadow cabinet member

Stated that any one who voted conservative in the London mayor elections against khan is a white supremist and a racist

Streeting I think his name is

Should change his name to B*** end

1462 over 5 years

That’s f**k all

zero difference to results

I wonder what group voter ID impacts?

Pensioners who vote Conservative…nah

Younger people, students, poor people living in rented rooms, Ie probable Labour voters….yeah quite a bit.

This isn’t about fraud, it’s a Tory policy to benefit Tories
