Conserving tree branch

Hi.
I'm working on a project and I need to somehow preserve this branch from rotting. I'm planning on making it a light source for my room, there's a photo of the branch and a drawing of a project

Needs drying and then a coat of oil or varnish [sprayed] to seal , though it looks like it is covered in mould so maybe look for a better source.?
