Until a few years ago, we had two separate rooms, a dining room and a kitchen side by side. After years of persuading Mrs Secure, we decided to knock out half the adjoining wall and block up one of the doors. Here is what it looks like now.
The measurements of the whole space are 5.14m side to side and a maximum of 5.73m towards the windows.
Between the kitchen and the den area is a stud wall.
So here's the issue. I am large and clumsy and the current kitchen space is too narrow when there are 2 people in the kitchen, especially when the DW is open. The kitchen width is 2.4m and the den area is 2.6m.
Funnily enough, I measured the in-law's kitchen which is great width-wise and it is 2.6m. But the cabinets and appliances go beyond the pillars in the kitchen, which they cannot do in the den space as they would encroach on the dining space, to the front right of the picture.
I am considering all possibilities, including demolition of the stud wall between the kitchen and den. I would like to keep the three areas, though: kitchen space, dining space and TV/ sofa space. I also want to keep the patio door, but it could be moved to the other side where the current kitchen window is.
I have considered evicting the oak sideboard (see pic below) and having the TV on the wall behind it, with the sofa pushed up against kitchen units that would be across the entrance to the kitchen space as you look at the photo above.
Going back to the in-law's kitchen, they have an L shaped kitchen and then a short ( 1.5 or 1.6m) run opposite with the kettle on (and the fridge opposite), which I think is a great idea as it keeps the tea brewers away from the rest of the kitchen.
Here is the area with the oak sideboard.
