Consumer Unit in Garage

Hi all.
We have just moved into a new house, which has an old fused type consumer unit installed in the garage, which supplies the rest of the house. I would like to upgrade the unit to a modern split load type, but is it acceptable to install one in the garage? Or being in the garage, would it have to have the relevant IP rating?

Yes they are commonly in the garage. Your electrician will advise as changing a CU is notifiable so you won't be doing it yourself will you?

Thanks Winston. No I'll be using an electrician. Just wanted to check that we don't need to re-site the consumer unit and move it indoors
