Converting Large Garage/Workshop

I have a large garage/workshop it's about 13m x 6m, double height.

I want to change it to living accommodation. I'm sure that someone has converted a similar thing further down the street, if so would it be easy to get the planning permission my my garage.

Any knowledge/suggestions would be great

You don't need planning permission unless you are turning into a self contained unit such as a granny flat or suchlike.

Or unless there is a condition on your original property planning permission requiring it to be kept as a garage

Would like to make it self contained, it has a separate electric meter from the main house already, I think it was built in the 19th century when the house was built so no problem with any conditions.

Is it mainly down to a change of usage?
