Can't speak for anyone else, but sometimes I'd like the author of a post to know that I've read it, but without replying to it or giving a "thanks". (An example might be someone - heaven forbid  - commenting positively on something I've written, but any other response might be seen as vain).

So how hard would it be to create an acknowledge button? Is it worth it? Can you be bothered?

Why not use the "thanks" button
Sometimes a thanks isn't really appropriate, whereas a nod that it has been read is.

sort of agree cantaloup.....the thanks button can often seem the wrong choice and yet it seems inappropriate to post an answer.....
I am surprised at the number of members with a private profile...I have sometimes had something that I would like to say that I don't care to post on the forum and yet am unable to send a PM.
Don't really understand all the secrecy...if you get a PM and care not to answer well just ignore it.....

If you’re not a “friend” you can still post in someone’s profile under the “comments” section, although it is visible to anyone to view apart form those you have blocked. I’ve get many direct contacts here where the OP feels they would rather contact me personally than post the open forums.

I can understand the subtle difference you’re seeking but I & others use the “thanks” button in the very context your seeking. IMO it works very well to get an "unspoken" message across when you read it in context with the thread, particularly with members you know well & who know your style  I’ve had subsequent PM’s to prove it!

Unfortunately this can sometimes defeat the object.....it is possible to set messages to 'accept from all registered users'
not too keen on 'friends lists' myself....just a personal choice :)

why not simply quote the post and add a word... agreed/well said/quite!/nice..... etc etc
