I have just tried to upgrade my cpu (500mhtz slot 1 pentium 3). I Bought from ebay a 370 socket pentium3 complete with heatsink and from a different buyer a slotek socket 370 to slot 1 adaptor. When I fitted the computer switched on and immediatly died with the monitor stuck in standby. I am a novice with pc hardware am I missing something obvious or have I bought duff stuff. Any reply please in laymans terms
cheers.
ps there is no permanent damage to my computer as I have put the old one back with no ill effects

now then that is the question I assumed because the replacement was a pentuim 3 and 100mhtz bus and slot 1 connection (via the adaptor) which is the same as the original that it should be compatable with the mother board. Is there anything else that should be taken into account.I believe the bios auto sets the correct working voltage.

If you can find the website of the MoBo manufuacturer, you will probably find they have a list of compatible CPUs (I found one for mine when I recemtly upgraded, so I presume it is common).

Are you sure the heatsink is fitted correctly? I believe the P3 is fitted with thermal protection so will switch off if it gets too hot (this only takes seconds, if that). Indeed, my old P2 fan broke and the CPU lived to tell the tale.

I have known someone to fit a heatsink without removing the backing tape on the thermal pad: that was enough to make it shutdown with heat after seconds. Removed the backing, was fine.
