Might get away with some quick setting cement, or some ordinary sand/cement mix.

Sure but bear in mind that that stuff, whilst convenient and nice to work with it does go off very quick so you have to work fast and only mix what you can lay in the time you have, also 6kg doesn't go very far, might be better off with something like this: https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Patch-Repair-Mortar---12-5kg/p/222709 or https://www.wickes.co.uk/Blue-Circle-Quality-Assured-Mortar-Mix---20kg/p/153706 Obviously both are more expensive than mixing your own sand/cement but these are clean and simple options and take away that hassle.

To fill cracks and gaps, you need a mortar gun. Keep it clean after use and it will last a long time.

To play with mortar mixing, you should get a tub. The tub can also be used for washing the mortar gun through emersion. When you hit the tub, any dried mortar will fall off.
