Crooked Pub

So why didn't the owner just demolish it?
Planning permission is needed to demolish a pub. There might be arguments over the use being lost but much easier to just make it unsafe and send the bulldozer in.

I don't see how the LPA, or anybody else, could make anybody rebuild it brick-by-brick.

Demolishing a building generally requires planning permission, that was extended to houses in 90's when developers were demolishing perfectly good houses to establish permission for a more profitable development. It was being put forward for listing and coincidentally it burnt down just after the new owner purchased it. She was the wife of the owner of a plant hire company, so bad luck all round. Arson is arson though and if it can be proved, which seems dubious, prosecutions could be brought. It matters not if the owner or someone connected did it, arson endangers the environment, fire fighters, and the public.

Blup

A cynical person might suggest that it was deliberately set alight, then it was demolished by an accomplice, possibly an employee of the arsonist in order to destroy any evidence.

Insewerence job?
Apparently the business next door, a Waste-Management Service, bought it, probably with aim to develop the land.
Or just sell the bricks at an extortionate price!

I think only an MP or mayor said they need to rebuild it, but maybe LA have made an announcement already?

Yep wasn’t listed, but pubs have special protection (in a way I can’t recall from memory) but there have been cases of pubs being demolished and ordered to be rebuilt.

Can’t be arson if it’s your property and there is no evidence of risk/attempt to endanger life.

If you buy a pub then demolish it without planning then you're in a lot of trouble, & if you have a developement plan then your £££ figures are now pretty much guesswork.

If you buy a pub then it burns down, if you demolish it for H&S reasons you have to inform the LA within 5days. The LA then has to prove it if it thinks anything untowards is happening.

These people KNOW what they are doing & unless they are incredibly stupid they will achieve their developement plans.

Not so sure, I doubt the owner did it, even if they did, its almost inevitable that you endanger life with a fire of that severity next to the public highway.

The building was not listed. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/map-search

However there have been instances where a building "of interest" has had to be rebuilt to be "of the same appearance" as the building that collapsed ( due to negligent maintenance ) or had been demolished without local authority permission.
Can you rebuild a crooked i.e. leaning building? The fine for illegal demolition can take account of any profit made so that is a possible route.

Yes, employ substandard trades people.

Being serious though

It should be possible to rebuild a near identical building given that the original had large stabilising buttresses and several metal straps and tie beams to control the lean

I'd heard a rumour that the black country museum had previously offered to take it and rebuild it, exactly as was, there.

This is what they did with two medieval pubs in Manchester after the IRA bomb.

Apparently the JCB used to demolish the pub was booked BEFORE the fire and on the day of the fire the fire brigade were blocked due to a pile of something dumped on the access road. No fancy Sherlock Holmes type required for this one me thinks........... ;)
