I disagree. Torture for the sake of bystanders gratification is disgusting.

They should give the relatives of those that are murdered the choice of method of execution. Let them carry it out too if they want. I’d happily cause as much pain, fear and suffering as possible before eventual death to someone who killed a friend or relative of mine. Much better than letting them painlessly drift away.

Well, if he was publicly tortured for his 35 years detention, surely someone watching would think twice before killing people.

Every attempt to quantify that effect says that murderers aren't deterred much by it. Not much more than just life in prison.

Generally murderers have poor impulse control and forward planning. So a threat that if they're caught they might be killed, or tortured, is pretty worthless.

It just doesn't work.

The executed prisoner was, on R5L this morning, quoted as having said (something along the lines of) "A society that executes people has lost it's humanity".

From the bloke that was on death row for............................carrying out an execution (for money).

Apparently the Oxygen levels start off normal and gradually Nitrogen levels are increased. There is no awareness or panic for the person, unlike CO2, where there would be panic and gasping for breath.

Well, the condemned thrashed about during the procedure.

It is not clear what that was due to.

But apparently, I was wrong. It is said that he was given pure Nitrogen from the off. Whether this alters the physiology of the death, I don't know.

There wouldn't be any change in the physiology of death.

Speculatively, there would be some resistance by the prisoner - using the 'mask', you would hear and feel the compressed gas entering the mask (reports of hissing), and it would be cold - strapped to a trolley, with gas administered against your will, it is an experience that would be fought against.

The gasping reported later on, may be 'agonal breathing', he would probably have been clinically dead at this point.
