DIY option for covering stone tile..?

I want to cover this flooring, it's laid badly, has gaps around the edges and it's too dark for the small space it's in making it feel darker. With it laid unevenly and also the surfaces not flat anyway, I can't just put something straight on top. I'm reluctant to remove it because it's going to be very difficult with how hard the tile is. I have looked into self leveling concrete but I'm also reluctant to do that as there is already a small step down into the living room and I don't want to make that more prominent.

Could anyone tell me what my options are? Or let me know the best way to remove if that the way I need to go to have it even throughout.

Firstly what you've got there is slate. Probably stuck down with tile adhesive.

If you don't want to use add height to this floor... then self levelling compound won't help you... in this case you will have to remove it.
Hopefully won't be too bad to remove... once you have one piece out (glasses, lump hammer and bolster chisel) you can get the chisel/crowbar under the tile and start prising them up.
You can also use a drill with chisel function if you have one, this would be the quickest method.

More than likely the larger tiles will break into smaller sections. Tiles probably around 15mm thick, plus 3-10mm adhesive.
