Living on edge of woodland have great problems with squirrels attacking bird-feeders, these are well protected but squirrels are very persistent still. Would appreciate advice on electronic gadgets (DIY) etc to deter the little monsters!

Not much works.
I'd set up a camera link to the TV and enjoy.
Apparently - birds cannot taste chilli powder but squirrels can. So mixing up very spicy birdfeed may work

This works well for us, all the small birds can get in, but the squirrels can't (they spend a lot of time trying)

at first my made a hole big enough for blackbirds to get in, amazingly even big fat squirrels can squeeze through a hole just big enough for a blackbird!

Try putting Vaseline on the pole.
We used to have a bird feeder which sat atop a round metal pole about 15mm in diameter (until some toe rag used it one night to try and jemmy his way into our shed :evil: ).

When we got it we thought "squirrels wont be able to climb up that".

Wrong.

But they couldnt climb it when it was coated with cooking oil, particularly if it rained.

And it was a hoot to watch them trying.

Never thought of using petroleum jelly.

I've just been looking at some 'squirrel-proof' bird feeders for sale online. Some are quite clever in that the bottom section where bird perch is spring loaded such that if a squirrel, or even a large bird, attempts to feed it sinks down slightly, closing off the openings to the seeds.

Unfortunately, I have found only two options:
1. items offered by obvious scammers - I fell for one of those once and never again;
2. Amazon who are at least trustworthy, but delivery is stated to be 1 to 2 months!
